# Electricity Cost by State > Electricity Cost by State (electricitycostbystate.com) answers "what does it cost to run" questions: the running cost of 31 household appliances and the home-charging cost of 24 electric cars in all 50 US states and DC, priced with each state's average residential electricity rate from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). The latest rate month is July 2026; rates are refreshed monthly when the EIA publishes. Figures are estimates for typical use, not quotes or advice. Cost = watts × hours of use × duty cycle ÷ 1,000 × the state's price per kWh. Refrigerators and freezers use typical annual consumption (ENERGY STAR) instead. A month is 365 ÷ 12 = 30.42 days; seasonal appliances (heaters, fans, dehumidifiers) are priced per month in season and their year counts only the season. Each page states the wattage, hours, season and rate next to the number. Electric cars use the EPA combined rating in kWh per 100 miles, measured at the wall (charging losses included). An optional charging-session estimate uses verified usable battery capacity ÷ 90% charging efficiency; a month is 1,000 miles; the gasoline comparison is a 30 mpg car at the AAA national average ($4.37 a gallon on October 5, 2026). Rates are the EIA average price paid by homes (residential revenue ÷ kWh sold, all utilities; Electric Power Monthly Table 5.6.A). For July 2026: US average 18.31¢ per kWh; cheapest Louisiana (12.72¢), most expensive Hawaii (48.00¢). Changes compare with the same month a year earlier. ## Main pages - [Home](https://electricitycostbystate.com/): what common appliances and electric cars cost to run at the US average rate, and every state's rate - [Electricity rates by state](https://electricitycostbystate.com/electricity-rates/): all 50 states and DC ranked by residential price per kWh, with the change from a year earlier - [Average electric bill by state, 2024](https://electricitycostbystate.com/average-electric-bill-by-state/): matching-year EIA residential bills, customers, purchases and prices; source-dated CSV with annual totals - [Read your electricity bill](https://electricitycostbystate.com/guides/how-to-read-electricity-bill/): original annotated sample and browser-only line-item calculator; effective and marginal rates, fixed charges and credits - [What appliances cost to run](https://electricitycostbystate.com/cost-to-run/): 31 appliances by category, with a page for every state - [What electric cars cost to charge at home](https://electricitycostbystate.com/cost-to-charge/): 24 electric cars, per 100 miles and per month, with a page for every state - [Electricity cost calculator](https://electricitycostbystate.com/calculator/): any watts or kWh a day, hours and days of use, at any state's rate or your own ## Calculators and hubs - [Single-speed vs variable-speed pool pump cost](https://electricitycostbystate.com/compare/pool-pump-vs-variable-speed-pool-pump/): same gross circulated volume; two sourced above-ground laboratory references or confirmed installed measurements, runtime feasibility and explicit hydraulic limits - [What heating and cooling appliances cost to run](https://electricitycostbystate.com/category/heating-cooling/): 7 appliances ranked by monthly cost - [What kitchen appliances cost to run](https://electricitycostbystate.com/category/kitchen/): 11 appliances ranked by monthly cost - [What laundry appliances cost to run](https://electricitycostbystate.com/category/laundry/): 3 appliances ranked by monthly cost - [What home office equipment cost to run](https://electricitycostbystate.com/category/office/): 3 appliances ranked by monthly cost - [Space heater and electric blanket: energy costs](https://electricitycostbystate.com/compare/space-heater-vs-electric-blanket/): An electric blanket warms a person, while a space heater warms a room.
