What it costs to run, at your state’s electricity rate.
Most answers to “how much does it cost to run a space heater?” use one national average rate. But the price of electricity for homes ranges from 13.1¢ to 52.7¢ per kWh depending on the state, so the same heater can cost several times as much in one state as in another. We give every appliance and electric car its own page for every state, priced with the latest official average from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), and refresh the rates every month.

How the numbers are made
Cost = watts × hours ÷ 1,000 × price per kWh. Always-on appliances like refrigerators use their typical annual consumption instead. Electric cars use their EPA efficiency rating. Each page states the wattage, hours and rate it used, and the methodology page lists every assumption.
What we don't do
- We don't sell appliances or electricity, and advertisers never change a number.
- We don't publish an appliance or car until we have a sourced wattage or efficiency figure for it.
- We don't estimate your bill: fixed charges, tiers and time-of-use pricing vary by utility.
