The 2024 state range runs from $92.88 in New Mexico to $212.12 in Hawaii. Each state combines its own electricity purchases and prices.

For a current rate benchmark, use the separate monthly electricity-price table. Multiplying that newer price by 1,000 kWh creates a hypothetical example, not this reported annual-period average bill.

A higher price can accompany a lower average bill

In 2024, California’s average price was 31.97¢ per kWh, compared with 14.94¢ in Texas. But average monthly purchases were 503 and 1,096 kWh respectively. Their average bills were $160.86 and $163.72.

Weather, home size, heating fuel, efficiency, occupancy and solar can affect purchases. This table alone cannot assign a cause to a state difference or predict a moving household’s savings.

How the annual averages are calculated

For your own bill, the annotated bill guide separates supply, delivery, fixed fees and credits, with a private browser calculator.

We display the published averages from EIA Table 5A, cross-checked against the matching residential columns in Tables 1, 2 and 3. Annual sales are in megawatthours; revenue is in thousands of dollars.

  • Monthly purchases = annual MWh sold × 1,000 ÷ customers ÷ 12.
  • Monthly bill = annual revenue in thousands of dollars × 1,000 ÷ customers ÷ 12.
  • Average price in cents/kWh = annual revenue in thousands of dollars ÷ annual MWh sold × 100.

These are ratios of utility totals. The US value uses national totals rather than a simple average of 51 state/DC averages. Display rounding means multiplying the two rounded table columns may differ slightly from the published bill. The CSV includes all three underlying totals.

“Customers” means residential utility accounts in this dataset, not a census count of people or unique homes. Purchases from the grid can differ from total household use when on-site solar supplies some electricity. The table is a mean, not a median, and does not describe each individual customer’s seasonal bills.
